Vibration
is about as annoying as a toothache. If not given proper
attention, it will cause your wallet to shrink in
size. Damage to electronics, fastenings, and engine
components could take place. Fiberglass hulls, because of their drumhead
effect, can magnify many times the actual vibration, loosening fittings,
causing stress cracks and many other adverse effects. One of the
frustrations of this business is explaining some of the causes of
vibration. Probably a half dozen times a week, during our busy
season, someone will bring in their wheel (prop) and ask to have
it's balance checked. Well, disappointment is usually reflected in the
customer's face when the static balance checks out to be OK . Most
people relate vibration to balance. Actually cavitation, bent shafts,
worn cutlass bearings, worn rudder shafts, could be the culprit. Also,
packing in the rudder stuffing box may need to be replaced or
tightened, or the inevitable pot warp wrapped up on the shaft,
(usually enough to make about six clothes lines for a family of
ten). For the benefit of those not familiar with our life style and
traditions, pot warp (rope) is used to attach the lobster buoy to the
trap. Maine has millions of traps and considered to be unique in the
lobster fishing industry. Traps rigged and ready to fish will cost the
fisherman a minimum of $ 60.00 each. Normally a lobsterman will fish 10
- 12 to a string, so bear in mind if you are navigating in our
waters, to please try to avoid running over gear (buoys). Thank
you.
